A note from our 5K coordinator, Lexie Archer:
Four years ago, following the destruction of the earthquake, I had the privilege of traveling to Haiti as a member of a Compassion Corps team. We were able to provide medical care, aid, supplies, love and support to men, women, and children, who had endured terrible loss due to that tragedy. What I experienced during that short trip to Haiti planted a seed in my heart that continues to grow today.
When I returned home to Pennsylvania, I was determined to continue to help the people affected by the earthquake and others like them – the poor, the hungry, the sick, the orphaned – anyone in need of God’s love and care. I decided to create 5k2kare4kids, an event that would generate funds for compassionate projects in Haiti and Africa.
In the spring of 2012, I was privileged to travel to Morocco with Compassion Corps to do a little more of the same kind of work. This time, the setting was different but the calling was the same. Again, I witnessed children in need of medicine, food, education and most of all, in need of love. God continued to grow my desire to serve and help these children in any way I could.
So the 5K has continued over the years. It’s one simple, small activity, but it is representative of something much more complex and significant. It’s a way for all of us to be a small part of God’s solution to many of His children’s overwhelming cry for help.
In 2013, 5k2kare4kids officially became Orphan Day 5K. This transition allowed us to partner with and bring awareness to Orphan Sunday (a day the Christian Alliance for Orphans has created to emphasize this global need and the fact that “Christians stand for orphans”.)
This year (our fourth year!) we plan to answer the call to care for orphans once again on Oct 25th with a 5K and a one mile kids’ fun run, the proceeds of which will go directly toward meeting basic needs and providing education for orphans in Liberia and Uganda.
Please consider joining us by involving your family, business or church in this effort! There are several ways that you can get involved:
